Follow-up Comment #4:

I modified fminsearch to only use the real portion from the evaluation of the
objective function, as Matlab does.  The change was made on the development
branch here https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/2ab2e289cf84.

This will be a part of the 6.1.0 release of Octave.  Marking as fixed and
closing report.
