Follow-up Comment #21, bug #57107 (project octave):

That brings up an interesting edge case: under this behavior, `double(char)`
and `char(double)` are no longer inverses of each other, so you can't
round-trip a piece of data through those transformations. Not sure of what
practical implications that would have. Aside from that now it's hard to get
the Unicode code point value from an input character, if you wanted to do
numeric comparison/code block membership tests/whatever on it.
