@Pantxo: No worries. And thank you for having done the hard lifting. I only
had to polish the rough edges.
I'd still like to know why I am not able to print eps or epsc. Maybe it is
related to the fact that short file names are disabled for the disc on which I
usually test Octave.
Can you see something in the diary (cases 4 and 5) that seems odd to you?
