Indeed I don't expect this changeset to have an high impact
on general applications, only a few specific operations are

If I test mat2cell, for example, by

for ii = 1:100;tic; n = 1e6; x = reshape (1:n, [1000, 1000])'; y = mat2cell
(x, [500,20,180,300], [100,90,810]); t(ii)=toc; endfor

I do see a speedup of more than 20%

Yet I agree with you that code clarity in this case is more important
