Follow-up Comment #4, bug #57348 (project octave):

I can confirm that exchanging Line 110 in linkage.m by the suggestion in
Comment #3 leads to a correct installation of the statistics package. Though
downloading the archive, unzipping, editing linkage.m, zipping the archive and
then installing the package manually might be the only workaround until a new
version of statistics or the dev is released. Thank you for the quick
confirmation!
