Follow-up Comment #13, bug #57044 (project octave):

One addendum to comment #12:  In case you manage some "/path/to/gnulib" in an
old state.  From Octave pulled "GNULIB_REVISION", that lies for
"/path/to/gnulib" in the future and is not fetched.  Then you need an internet
connection and "/path/to/gnulib" is updated, otherwise an error is thrown:


./bootstrap: Bootstrapping from checked-out octave sources...
fatal: reference is not a tree: 70f2e740bba4624934fa1b9e6680d4234949c4a4
