Follow-up Comment #2, bug #57837 (project octave):

with a brand new dev build

and like you

ans = 39

I still get the same error. Looking at the error message ... I just noticed
that savannah didn't parse it – the error message

octave_aXrcGK (1, 'z = x' * x;', 'z = x' * x;');

it seems that the "'" is used for both strings and the transpose.
