Follow-up Comment #18:

I checked in the patch which at least makes things better.  We'll see if we
start getting more bug reports about other strange behavior when plotting with
gnuplot due to this.

I don't have time to debug why changing the "position" property makes gnuplot
behave better, but there is still room for improvement if you're interested in
looking deeper at this.
