Follow-up Comment #13, bug #59018 (project octave):
I have installed the version 6.0.90 and it seems to have fixed my problem.
I have been using it now most of yesterday afternoon and most of this morning,
and it has not crashed on me yet. This includes when I use the variable
editor. I don't know if this fixed the OP's problem, but I consider my
problems fixed in 6.0.90.
