Details:

the following commands show that the dir-method for the ftp class is extremely
slow


obj = ftp('ftp.gnu.org');
cd(obj, '/gnu/emacs');
tic ;
ddir = dir(obj);
toc


I get 76 seconds, more than 100x with what I get from Matlab (0.6 sec).
