Follow-up Comment #11, bug #60387 (project octave):

I think I see the problem.  There is a loop that iterates over each file, and
for each file it actually fetches the content (but discards it), and then
queries how much data was transferred to figure out the file size.  That's
absurdly inefficient, if I'm right.
