Follow-up Comment #6:

running Octave 6.3.0 on Windows 10:

- open octave, enter a command or two, exit octave.  
- verify octave.hist has an updated Modified date.
- set octave.hist property to Hidden. verify property is set (with dir /AH)
- open octave.  enter another couple commands, exit octave.
- new octave.hist file is written, without hidden property, containing
complete history.

no crash evident. As it's been 2 years, the last comment from hardy was to let
this rest, and it seems the comment #0 suggestion may no longer be viable,
closing as Won't Fix. can reopen again if there's interest.
