@Markus, thank you! I had not known about the value function of the octave_int
type. Let me look into using that.

I had the same question about whether casting to double was the right thing to
do because of values above flintmax, but I realized that the number of
elements in a range is not going to exceed flintmax for decades to come, and
cautiously used the casting. Let me see how to achieve that without casting.
