Follow-up Comment #9:

Although maybe not Matlab-compatible (in Matlab interaction with plots is
quite different than Octave these days), I've tried Remi's patch for a while
and it works perfectly - for me.

The patch still applies cleanly as well.
I'd suggest that for the time being, this patch can be committed until we have
a better solution for dragging the legend (and other plot objects) around.
