I can't reproduce these problems.  As far as I can tell, Octave works
fine on my Linux system.  I'm using

  i586, Linux 2.0.0, gcc 2.7.2, libg++ 2.7.14, and libc 5.2.18

What versions of libg++ and libc do you have?
(Run ldd /your/path/to/octave to find out).
