Just for the record I've built octave 2.1.52 with blas lapack and atlas on PPC linux using GCC 3.3.2 and haven't had any problems yet.

I had problems on IRIX 6.5 when combining -lscs and gcc 3.x.
My solution was to configure --without-lapack --without-blas,
or to use the CC compiler.  For details see:
