A student of mine is extending load/save of Octave using the XML based Open Document Format of spreadsheets in Open Office. 

If he has time he will also do it for Excel. (Alternatively OpenOffice could
save/load it into/from Execl format)

Do you know any work which has been done in this?

Is there a wider interest in this?
