I don't understand what you mean by "out of my hands".

Did you try configuring Octave with

  ./configure F77=gfortran

?  Did that work?

Are you paying Red Hat for support?

But anyway, it seems to be a problem of mixing g77, which was based on
an older version of GCC, and a newer gcc and g++.  The problem should
be solved if you use gfortran to compile the Fortran source in Octave.
