Thanks for updating the NEWS file for this addition.  Will you please
also add @DOCSTRING tags for these functions in the manual?

We'll also need to review the manual for the release so that we
include all (or at least nearly all) of the new functions in the
manual.

In the future, I'd like to aim for changesets that include NEWS and
manual changes any time there are user-visible changes.  I know, this
will be a challenge for me too, since I've always been slow to update
the manual.
