No, the point of that change was just to avoid the assignment in the
if condition.  It avoids a GCC warning.  But I don't see how it would
fix the problems I'm seeing.  But since the problems I'm seeing are
not repeatable, maybe it is just some luck that they currently appear
to be fixed for you.
