Well, for my money the "abstract logos" are beautiful and would serve very well.

I like the new one too, but if it were me, I would take the first abstract logo with the smoother curves and superimpose the "infinity" like the second abstract logo.

I need to take gimp lessons from Fotios! These are excellent. I have no idea how he does that...

In the spirit of free software (and O'Reilly books), perhaps we could choose a
mascot?  If JWE has a favorite animal, perhaps we can combine that with an
integral sign or something that conveys matrix multiplication or solving a
system of ODE's? ...

I also think a logo should be simpler and more schematic than these images --
Fotios's images are very cool, but I think a little too complex to convey "free
software that does math".  We might be unconciously trying to emulate the famous
sombrero, but there is really no need.

My $0.02.  Probably not even worth that...
