At this point I think it would be pretty much impossible given our use
of gnulib, which is pretty tightly coupled to automake, autoconf, and

I keep hearing people say that if only Octave had

  better graphics
  a GUI
  better support for Windows
  a different build system
  etc.

then (at some nebulous future time) it would have a lot more

  users
  developers
  funding

That would be great, but I guess it's a bit of a chicken/egg problem.
Who do you suppose is going to do all the work required to make all
these things happen?  Maybe all those users and developers with all
that funding from the future are working on a time machine right now
so they can pop in at any minute and save the day!

Why do you say that you can only use Matlab?  Isn't it possible to
compile MEX files now, with Octave?  And aren't there also
alternatives to Windows?
