Ben,

I added a task with the list of functions here
(https://savannah.gnu.org/task/index.php?12153).  I'm also CC'ing Jordi.  I
think transitioning these functions would be an excellent introductory
exercise for new programmers at OctConf 2012 in a few weeks.
