You made the right choice. As I see it, bug fixes should be in the bug tracking category, and the patch category is more for non-bug things such as new features, restructuring of code, i.e., something where the patch might evolve a bit before finding its way into the repository. The category name "patch" is much more vague than "bug", but I suppose there is no precedent nomenclature for the latter category.
