Hello Octave!

Hello grand and mysterious maintainers of octave!

Allow my to introduce myself... My name is Eric Addison. I love programming, and had many opportunities to make use of octave back in school where my advisor was too cheap to purchase MATLAB for the group. I have a great affection for octave and even petitioned to rewrite an undergraduate physics course in scientific computing to revolve around octave. (alas I was unsuccessful, and the course will continue to use ... MathCAD *shudder*)

In light of recent job insecurity concerns, I have decided to begin beefing up my coding repertoire. Advice for this sort of endeavor often comes in the form of "contribute to an open source project". While this has generally, in the past, felt like a daunting and foreboding (i.e. how do I get started with that?) kind of a task, thanks to the octave projects wiki page I have been able to jump in and give it a try.

I have submitted a simple patch to savannah.gnu.org (http://savannah.gnu.org/patch/?8722), which includes a value readout in the status bar for image() and imagesc() plots. Nothing fancy, but it was on the wiki projects list!

Anyways... I wanted to take a minute to say hi. I am excited about contributing to an open-source project, octave in particular. Unless I'm out of line here, I might try to poke at another project on the list.

Please advise if this is completely the wrong venue for this sort of email!!!

Thanks!

Eric
