Sorry for the confusion. It shouldn't matter honestly. Building out of
the source tree has the advantage that you can clean most (but not all!)
of the build by deleting the build directory.

The best way to build a source distribution is to make a fresh clone (or
run `hg purge --all` to delete all untracked files), followed by
bootstrap and whichever form of `configure && make all && make dist` you
prefer.
