Follow-up Comment #1:
These files are intentionally not in .hgignore so that hg purge will clean
them up but leave the ones that are more permanent after bootstrapping, i.e.
what would go in a tarball, but nothing beyond that.
If you're bothered by the output of configure and make, then build out of
source or add the hg ignore patterns to a local hgignore file specified in
octave/.hg/hgrc or in your ~/.hgrc.
