With a gcc-5.1.0 build (latest mxe-octave) rather than 4.9.2 the Ctrl-v crash
didn't occur with the patches in comments #10 and #7, but I didn't test it
thoroughly.

Maybe I have time for a new test build before I'll be away for a week so
possibly I can try & report only after May 17th.
