Follow-up Comment #3, patch #9040 (project octave): Lachlan, thank you for taking a look at that patch. "lighting" must be called with one input variable (apart from the axes handle already stripped by __plt_get_axis_arg__) and no output variable. Everything else should get caught with the if statement you mentioned.
