Details:

The attached autoconf macro simplifies using symbol alternatives of different
Octave versions. An explanation is contained in the file.

The second attachment contains an example call to the macro.

The files are meant to be published at Octave Forge as utilities for package
maintainers.

Comments and improvements are welcome.
