In the next release of OpenEXR, class ChannelList will include minimal support for layers using the "layername.channelname" naming convention. See the excerpt from file ImfChannelList.h, below.

There is no standard way to store the order of layers or channels, or how layers should be combined, since people don't seem to agree (yet) on how this information should be represented.
With the posts on the subject, I realize this is indeed quite application specific. But thanks to your additions, I can now greatly simplify the storage of the ordering information.
