Well, I don't just post rumors to the Cinepaint mailing list.  :)
It is a fact (it crashes Shake). This what all our compers experience 
here every time we feed a ZIP EXR into it (v4 of Shake that is -- and v3 
was just as bad).
So this is me confirming this on behalf of RSP.
Our entire pipeline thus uses PIZ compressed EXRs... :>
