copies from elsewhere and I freely admit to not groking autotools.  As I
said, I know how to work with configure,but I'm quite clueless on
autotools other than having the vague idea that they're more or less the
configure for configure itself!)

Ok, it seems to be dependency of gnome-autogen so you seem to have to
install it.
