The first thing to do in a situation like this is start up the offending
program from a console window. Often, strong hints of the nature of the
problem will be printed to <stdout> or <errout>, both of which are normally
/dev/null-ed if there is no console to print it out to, and no redirection of
said file identifiers to actual files, on the command line.
See if that helps.
