[Pan-users] Pan 0.14.2 ignores my .newsrc file?

I've just upgraded to SuSE 9.1, and Pan 0.14.2 does not seem to save 
anything in the .newsrc file.

Details: if I tell Pan to use .newsrc with my default news server, it 
saves every time an empty file. I have tried to shut down Pan, overwrite 
.newsrc with an old copy and restart it, and it seems to ignore it - it 
started up with the same unread messages it had when I closed it; on 
exit, it zeroed .newsrc again.

Has anyone encountered the same problem? Is it something I'm doing 
wrong? The configuration options are exactly the same I had with the old 
version that came with SuSE 9.0... or is it a bug with the 
SuSE-distributed version?
