I've just tried sorting up and down by subject, then up and down by
date, then back to subject.  It all works for me.  I'm using revision
318 of Pan updated Aug. 1 from svn.  My versions of glib, gtk, and
Gnome are from the Gnome ftp repository within the last two months.
