That's something I've chickened out of so far with Linux!
Anyhow, I've now found that what I needed on PCLInuxOS to install the RPMs was
KPackage.
Once I'd installed that I had no problems installing the old-Pan Mandriva, and
having remembered to first install and tune qtk-gt-engine, I can even control
Pan's background colour!
