Hi Duncan,
I don't know if this helps, but I tested a few builds to see what happens.
In version 0.14.2, it works as you remember. When you delete a message
from the header pane, it is also deleted from the cache. However, in
version 0.91 (and 0.132 to present) it remains in the cache.
