I've figured out, what's going on.
I had been trying to use the newsserver of the internet provider IN-Berlin
(in-berlin.de). I've contacted their support, and he kind of hinted that this
is a server issue. They are deleting all but the last part of multipart
messages, on purpose (so it seems). They don't want users to download binary
news. I can kind of understand this, but just doing so, without any warning, is
very bad.
I've tried it with another news provider (Disputo), and it appears to works
fine, with the same version of pan.
