I've seen other webmail products that did caching through using
A db and it certainly CAN cause dramatic speed improvements.

It was Squirrelmail. I had ported it to phpGW. But the code was a mess. 
Very hard to maintain. And slow with big folders. It's already in cvs
now.

But this week i plan to release a new version of it, under a new new. It

will use the database to cache headers and sorting. It's really fast 
already. I just to solve some little bugs.
