I tried a fresh checkout of the proposal-branch - and to make it work, I 
had to change the

$args->set('method', 'any', 'string');
to
$args->set('method', 'any', 'any');

in function get_var() and function reg_var() in core_functions.inc.php

This is an example of (failing) incoming data to $args->set
 name: register
 default: 1
 type: bool
