Maybe...

But if you have your time interval set to every 5 minutes, 
then you would have 12 (every 5 minutes) * 24 (hours / day) 
little boxes on the calendar.

The way I have it, if you have an appointment outside of 
the daystart/dayend times, they will appear above or below 
the users setting.  This allows you quick access to your 
calendar for business use.  What's important during the 
day, what's outside of work hours.

That's just my philosophy on how I implemented it.

The day view should always start at 00:00
and end at 23:59

The only influence that the work day start and end
setting have should be that the corresponding hours
are in a different color.

This requires different styles for work and other
times.

Alternatively, the start and end of the work day
could be marked by thick lines.
