First it should check for a linked contact and see if there is an email address there, if so use it, if not move on to the various email apps. You may provide an account_id or a person_id though. Also, for it to work you actually have to set the email address in the addressbook for the corresponding person. That's weird because I setup the mail module to have the site domain.
