Oh, absolutely.  Sorry for replying so late.

That was a mistake.  The variable was always meant to be to be extern,
and in fact I had already fixed this problem in the defects branch some
time ago.  Thanks for noticing that master was broken as well.

Fixed, tagged as v0.9.212 , updated submodule in Poke.
