This won't do -- my goal is to build PSPP as a Fedora package; it
doesn't make any sense to build with different compiler.

I'm trying to help you achieve your goal, and I'm seeking
information. So I would be interested to see the results if you use
an earlier compiler. If you find that gcc 4.1.2 works, whereas 4.3.0
does not, then we can be reasonably confident that it's a compiler
issue. On the other hand if you change compiler you get the same
results with an earlier compiler, then we know that this is a red
herring and to look elsewhere.

So, if it's at all possible, could you try an older compiler and let
us know the result? For the reasons mentioned below, I'm reasonably
confident you will find that 4.1.x or 4.2.x will work, but I would
like you to try it, just to be sure.

Looking at the gcc release notes at seems to suggest that we're
on the right track. In which case, which uses gsl and is compiled
using gcc 4.3 is going to break in the same way. I think the gsl
maintainers should be made aware of this (if they're not already).
