Doesn't DirectFB-via-SDL already work?
Run a guest. Switch to another (host) virtual terminal. Watch qemu continue drawing on the framebuffer. Doesn't count as "working" in my book.
If not why not? I'm pretty sure fixing that would be way simpler than adding a whole new output backend.
Didn't investigate where the bug is and how hard it would be to fix it. cheers, Gerd
