I saw Jakub marked this bug closed with "only i486 support that, but RHEL5 use -march=i386", so do we have ongoing fix on qemu-kvm?
Should be easy to add a ./configure test for this. -- I have a truly marvellous patch that fixes the bug which this signature is too narrow to contain.
