This course presents an overview of the codes and standards governing the design of pressure retaining components and the piping design process. Topics covered are: pipe sizing for various flow conditions and pipe wall thickness calculation for internal pressure. Flow and pressure drop calculation; allowable stress and basic piping stress analysis, loading on piping system, basic knowledge and tools required to design a functional pipe system for process and power plants. Pipe failure case studies will be included as part of the discussion to provide an insight into systems that did not perform as expected. The main objective of this two-day workshop is to provide participants with a fundamental understanding of the nature of transportation demand and how it can be analyzed. This workshop will cover the sequential demand analysis technique, the most frequently used method of determining the transportation demand. Finally, it will cover some of the data collection methods used in travel demand analysis.

Structural Design Step by Step Workshop (1.8 CEUs)

This course is a practical structural design course that contains step-by-step procedures to help understanding and solving routine structural problems. The course contains a short introduction to the National Building Code of Canada, NBCC 2005, and then goes into details on how to calculate the expected loads on different structures, which include dead, live, snow, wind, seismic and Thermal loads.
A summary of the required structural analysis basics that are needed for structural design will be explained. The course then goes into the design of steel and reinforced concrete structural elements by limit states design according to the Canadian Standard Association CSA codes S16-01 and A23.3-04, respectively. The connection design of steel members and the design of deep and shallow foundations are also discussed.

Ultraviolet (UV) Disinfection for Water and Wastewater Treatment Workshop (1.2 CEUs)

The course takes the participant from a state of little or no knowledge of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection to the state where the participant will be able to design a UV disinfection unit for a water or wastewater treatment plant.

Each lecture session will be followed by a problem-solving period, where participants can gain further insight into the fundamentals and design issues by working out practical problems, which will then be solved in a group session.

Culverts rehabilitation will also be introduced with the state-of-the-practice tools. An understanding of the hydrological and hydraulic principles that underlie practical design will also be developed. Case studies will be presented to demonstrate in very practical terms the pros and cons of alternative strategies, the pitfalls that can be avoided, and the design features that characterize successful installations. The uniqueness of this workshop is its emphasis on hands on exercises for designing the various components of channel and culvert structures.

Slab on Ground Design Workshop (1.2 CEUs)

Description
This course is a practical structural design course that contains step-by-step procedures which include instructions to help understand and design for slab on ground. This course presents information on the design of slabs-on-ground, primarily industrial floors. The course addresses the planning, design, and detailing of slabs. Background information on design theories is followed by discussion of the types of slabs, soil-support systems, loadings, and jointing. Design methods are given for unreinforced concrete, reinforced concrete, shrinkage-compensating concrete, post-tensioned concrete and fiber reinforced concrete slabs-on-ground, followed by information on shrinkage and curling problems. Advantages and disadvantages of each of these slab designs are provided, including the ability of some slab designs to minimize cracking and curling more than others. Several design methodology will be introduced including the ACI design methodology. Examples using several design methods are also provided.

Seismic Design & Detailing Techniques (1.8 CEUs)

This course covers both theoretical and practical aspects of seismic analysis and design of steel and RC buildings. The course contains a basic introduction to earthquake engineering and seismology that helps understanding the sources, causes and different parameters of earthquakes and then goes into details on how to analyze structures subjected to dynamic forces, vibrations and earthquake ground motions. Both equivalent static and dynamic analysis are presented. The course then investigates how the seismic design is handled in building codes. Participants in this course will be offered comprehensive and crucial guidelines to understanding elements and procedures involved in the commissioning and start up of electrical apparatus and systems involved in major industrial and commercial projects. The course addresses the special problems that may be encountered in the starting up of any electrical system for the first time, which, regardless of size, type or industry, is a special event. Fundamental to the commissioning task is the significant effort required to test each individual apparatus to ensure its proper functioning and its ability to offer service continuity under the specific operating conditions required by the industrial environment. A good deal of time will be spent discussing practical aspects of testing major equipment such as cables, motors, transformers and switchgear. The course will highlight testing procedures, standard testing frequencies, what to expect in the results of testing and remedial actions. The importance of maintenance to maintain design life expectancy can not be overemphasized and the course will offer details of philosophies underlying maintenance practices. This course deals with safety considerations and testing and start-up procedures for all the components of any electrical system.
