I'd prefer to just wait. Moving to a quarterly release cycle post-1.1 would mean that users don't need to wait very long to try new things out.
Having transient options or dual firmwares just makes switching harder to do because it creates a temptation to leave both options available until every last little detail is resolved. Doing a one-time switch puts emphasis on resolving the details ASAP.
