This probably implies it should only be implemented
if device supports the modern mode.
Not sure what's the best way to handle transitional
devices.

Tested with vhost, and it does not seem to work.
So more TODO:
- make this work with vhost-user and vhost-net.
Also, it seems prudent to add
- make the new behaviour conditional on a new property
